Resource Allocation Problems with Cost Functions

We study the complexity of a multilateral negotiation framework in which autonomous agents agree in pairs to exchange resources in order to minimise their individual cost. We are interested in establishing whether an allocation of resources that minimises total cost can be reached from an initial allocation in which one agent holds all the resources and one resource is transferred in each contract. We demonstrate experimental results showing that this is usually the case, and we also show that if each agent’s cost function is defined in a particular way, such that the cost of a set of resources is defined using a spanning tree, then it can be decided in polynomial time whether a sequence of individually rational allocations can lead to a minimal-cost allocation of resources.
